Seagate Buys e-Discovery Company, MetaLINCS

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif.-December 6, 2007-Today, Seagate Technology (NYSE:STX) announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire MetaLINCS, a technology leader in the fast-growing E-Discovery market. MetaLINCS’s innovative, patent-pending software helps companies respond to litigation and regulatory issues that require them to search large volumes of electronic data for relevant information. MetaLINCS will become part of the Seagate Services Group and support its mission to help business customers protect and manage valuable company information. Financial terms were not disclosed.

MetaLINCS, based in San Jose, California, was founded in 2003 and has more than 50 employees, Seagate said. Its CEO, Ramon Nunez, will be in charge of Seagate Services Group's E-Discovery unit, according to the company.

This is just the latest acquisition for Seagate in 2007. The company, which is based in Scotts Valley, California, also bought EVault, which sells online backup and archiving services to small- and medium-sized businesses.

Deloitte to Acquire Forensic Data Services

Deloitte has cemented itself as the biggest provider of forensic services to Australian companies by acquiring computer forensic and electronic discovery specialist Forensic Data for an undisclosed sum.

Companies are increasingly using forensic services to deal with a new wave of regulation, particularly when they are caught up in investigations.

To meet demand, Deloitte's is growing its forensic business at a 50 per cent a year clip, according to partner Tim Phillips.

Its purchase of Forensic Data has added 12 staff to its team of 125 people and 17 partners.

Search giant Autonomy has launched a new document preservation tool, designed to help IT managers and legal teams in their e-discovery and compliance efforts on client devices.

Developed by the firm's Zantaz subsidiary, Desktop Legal Hold works by monitoring and locking down any relevant information including emails, PDFs and instant messages, across mobile devices such as laptops, USB devices and smartphones.

Iron Mountain Buys E-Discovery Firm

Iron Mountain will shell out $158 million in cash to buy e-discovery company Stratify Inc. by the end of the year, if shareholders and regulators approve.

Iron Mountain announced the deal as part of its third-quarter earnings report this morning. It has had a partnership with Stratify since January 2007, and execs say the relationship fared well among enterprise customers from the start.

Stratify, a profitable privately held firm founded in 1999 and headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is predicted by Iron Mountain to be on track for $30 million revenues this year. It has around 110 customers and 185 employees, about half of whom reside in Bangalore, India. Iron Mountain says Stratify's profit margin is now between 20 percent and 30 percent, but the new parent plans to improve on that. Earnings from Stratify, however, will be minimally accretive to Iron Mountain's earnings in the first quarter of full ownership, execs say.

Shepherd Data Services Acquires Marathon Document Solutions

DOAR Litigation Consulting of Lynbrook has spun off a new company to focus on the booming legal field of e-discovery.

Norwood-based Salix Data Solutions is purchasing Copy Plex Inc.

Salix Data Solutions said Wednesday that it is purchasing Copy Plex Inc., a Cincinnati-based company that provides litigation support services to law firms. The sale is expected to be finalized March 30.

Norwood-based Salix will consolidate Copy Plex's Walnut Street location and staff with its own, according to a news release. The combined company will provide content management, electronic data discovery, coding, scanning, image conversion, trial technology services and computer forensics, among others.
